Kurz-Biographie

Keiner hat den Modern Jazz und Bebop so beeinflusst wie der Altsaxofonist Charles Christopher Parker, genannt Charlie Parker oder schlicht "Bird". Als Hommage an seine kongenialen Leistungen wird die Geschichtsschreibung des Jazz in eine Ära vor und nach ihm eingeteilt. Eine ähnliche Ehre wurde auf diesem Gebiet nur noch Louis Armstrong zuteil.

Charlie Parker galt schon zu Lebzeiten als eines der größten Talente am Altsaxofon. Wie allen Jazz-Musikern, die in den 40iger und 50iger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts groß herauskamen, mangelte es auch in Parkers Leben nicht an Drogen- und Gewaltexzessen. Legenden ranken sich um angezündete Hotelzimmer, Prügeleien auf der Bühne, Verhaftungen, durchgekokste Nächte, Orgien, seine Heroinsucht und Selbstmordversuche. Als Mensch war er ein selbstzerstörerisches Enfant terrible, was er nicht zuletzt mit seinem Verhalten gegenüber seinen Ehefrauen und Kindern immer und immer wieder unter Beweis stellte. Nichtsdestotrotz schenkte er der Welt Melodien, die noch die nachgeborenen Generationen erreichen, was beweist, dass er seinen Spitznamen „Bird“ nicht zu unrecht getragen hat.

Geboren in Kansas City wurde Charlie Parker das Glück zuteil, in einer der Jazz-Zentren schlechthin aufzuwachsen. Damit Parker das Saxophon spielen lernen konnte, kaufte ihm seine Mutter ein Saxophon, das Charles liebevoll pflegte und mit Gummibändern und Klebestreifen zusammenhielt. Saxophon-Unterricht hat er nie genommen. 1935 brach Parker die Schule ab, um in diversen Tanzorchestern, beispielsweise in Bands wie Tommy Douglas oder Buster Smith, für die immer wieder Altsaxofonspieler gesucht wurden, erstes eigenes Geld zu verdienen.

Ende der 30iger Jahre zog es Charles Parker nach Chicago, wo er sich bis 1940 als Tellerwäscher und Gelegenheitsmusiker über Wasser hielt und in nahezu jeder Band auftauchte in der Saxophonisten gesucht wurden. Ab 1940 an erspielte sich Parker im Orchester des Pianisten Jay McShan ein regelmäßiges Einkommen. Zusammen tourten sie durch die USA und McShan nahm Charlie auch mit nach New York. Hier trennten sich ihre Wege, denn Parker lernte Earl Hines kennen und fing an in seinem Orchester zu spielen. Sie jammten des Öfteren im “Minton’s Playhouse“, dies war sowohl für Charlie Parker eine glückliche Fügung, als auch für den Bebop, der gerade dabei war sich zu entwickeln. Das besondere am Bebop sind u.a. die komplexen Changes, die oft auch bei höherem Tempi verwendet werden. Meist haben die Musiker dabei die Changes in Form von Leadsheets (Saxophon Leadsheet) notiert.

1944 wurde die Billy Eckstines Combo gegründet und Parker schloss sich Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster und Al Haig an. Dizzy Gillespie war es auch der Miles Davis und Parker miteinander bekannt machte. Zusammen gründeten sie die „Charlie Parkers Reboppers“, nahmen die „Ko Ko“ – Sessions auf und revolutionierten den Jazz. Parker, wegen seiner Altsaxophon Improvisationen und Höhenflügen anerkennend „Bird“ genannt, war wie Eingangs schon erwähnt stark drogenabhängig und scherte sich herzlich wenig darum, was mit seinen Kompositionen und eingespielten Stücken geschah. Oft verkaufte er die Rechte an einem Song für einen Schuss, weswegen seine Diskographie wahrscheinlich immer fragmentarisch bleiben wird. Am 29. Juli 1946, im Alter von 26 Jahren, folgte - seinem Lebensstil Rechnung tragend - unausweichlich Charlie Parkers Zusammenbruch bei einer Studioaufnahme.

Im April 1947 kehrte „Bird“ Parker nach einem Abstecher an die Westküste wieder nach New York zurück um mit Miles Davis, Duke Jordan, Joe Albany, Tommy Potter und Max Roach ein Quintett zu gründen, um wieder Altsaxofon spielen zu können und mit der „Jazz At The Philharmonic“-Reihe pausenlos durch die Staaten zu touren. Langsam begann der Bebop musikalisch zu stagnieren, doch dank seiner Bühnenpräsenz und aufgrund des Umstandes, dass Parker eine der führenden Persönlichkeiten dieser Musik war, konnte er sich damit über Wasser halten.

In den Jahren 1951 und 1952 zerfielen alle von Parker gegründeten Bands und er verarmte. Die Musik war ihm inzwischen so egal wie irgend möglich geworden und er spielte mit Streichern kitschige Auftragsarbeiten. 1953 arbeitet er nochmals mit Miles Davis zusammen und begann 1954 einen Selbstmordversuch, der ihn in die Schizophrenie stürzte. Sein Leben endete früh und tragisch am 12. März 1955 in New York, wo der Leichenbeschauer ihn auf ca. 55 Jahre schätzte, obwohl Parker erst 34 Jahre alt war. Charlie Parker gilt vielen heute noch als einflussreichster Altsaxophonist aller Zeiten !
